Puppy socialization and vaccine calendar

Enter a birth date in setup and this page dates the socialization window, the vaccine series, the earliest class start and the fear periods the sources describe. Your veterinarian fills in the vaccine dates and decides which places are safe.

Limits

Your veterinarian decides the vaccine dates and which places your puppy may visit before the series is complete. This calendar shows the windows the published guidance describes; it never says a puppy is protected. Ohio State's guidance says puppies are not fully protected until the end of the series, around 16 to 20 weeks. Socialization still happens before then; the places change. Ask the authority

Dates are calculated from the birth date in your setup. A row marked "This week" is where your puppy's age falls today. The last column is blank on purpose: write in the dates your veterinarian gives you, on screen or on a printout.

Why the dates overlap

Two clocks run at once in a young puppy's life. The socialization period is the stretch of weeks when a puppy accepts new people, animals, places and handling most easily. The puppy vaccine series (here, the distemper, adenovirus and parvovirus combination) is a set of doses spaced through the same weeks, and protection is not complete until the series ends. Rabies and leptospirosis have their own schedules, which your veterinarian sets. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior's position statement on puppy socialization resolves the overlap this way: socialization before full vaccination should be the standard of care, in places and classes chosen to keep the disease risk low. The 2015 AAHA behavior guidelines say there is no medical reason to delay puppy classes until the series is complete, if sick animals are excluded and hygiene is kept. Convention

The sources do not agree exactly on where the window ends. The table below shows each figure with its publisher. Socialization and confidence explains the window and how to use it.

Fictional example

Biscuit was born on August 3, 2026 (a fictional date). Her socialization period began on August 24. She came home on September 28 at 8 weeks, a week after the breeder gave her first vaccine at 7 weeks. Her first fear period runs from about September 28 to October 12, and she is at its end this week, so the Nakamuras still watch her reactions closely and keep new things at a distance. Her core window closes around October 26, and her last core dose falls on November 23 or later. Open: the dates of her remaining doses and which places she may visit before then. The veterinarian settles both at this week's visit; the family writes the dates in the last column.
